What Do You Need To Know Before Submitting Your Resume Online

Your resume is updated. The online application has been completed. Then you hit submit
button with enthusiasm and confidence. The days and weeks pass but all you receive is silence. What could be wrong? There’s a lot of misinformation on the Internet about electronic resume submission. We don’t just send our applications online because we want it to but we submit it for the main reason we seek for a job and we want to be noticed. Here are some points to consider:

Does font size and style really matter?

Most systems take in information either by the candidate uploading their resume in a pdf, a Word document form. Others require you to copy and paste their information into individual
windows which sometimes changes the format of your document.  It is suggested that you should use standard font styles such as Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica, Calibri or other typical sans serif styles. Font size is another thing to consider. You need to stick to a size of 10-12 point fonts to ensure that it is comprehensible.

Do keywords matter?

Keywords in resumes matter to a certain extent, but not to the level people often think. You must be sure to include appropriate words and phrases so your resume will appear near the top in resume database search results. To ensure successful electronic resume submission, don’t try to be clever by using unusual fonts including graphics or horizontal lines. Create a resume that is simply formatted for electronic uploading and save your creativity for the hard copy resume you bring with you to the job interview.

Here are some other tips when making your resume:

  1. Save your resume with your name as the file name (Last name, first name).
  2. Make sure when adding your picture to your resume, you format the resolution of
your photo to be smaller so your resume is at least 500kb or less. This makes it
easier for employers to download your resume when needed and doesn’t take up too
    much space.
  3. Be clear and concise with your experiences and skills for recruiters to understand
your qualifications. Be sure to use skills that are relevant to the job you are applying
for. For example, if you are applying as a programmer, you should add
programming languages you are an advanced level in. You should also provide a
rating scale of 1-10 so employers knowing your competency for each skill.
